New Course, New Classmates!

Wednesday 24th September, 2014

Hello everybody! Nice to meet you!

So, we start a new course. And that’s why the first thing was to introduce each other.

We started “breaking the ice” with a game to learn our names. Actually (in fact), it was for me to learn your names because I’m very bad at names! I learnt them but I don’t know if I’ll remember them next Wednesday!
The game consisted in saying a sentence like this: “My name is María and I like M…(something beginning with the initial letter of our names) This is a cumulative game which means that the following person had to repeat the previous sentences.

Then we interviewed each other asking questions such as:

·         Where do you live?
·         How do you spell your surname?
·         What year are you in?
·         What’s your favourite subject?
·         How many brothers and sisters do you have?
·         Do you have a pet?
·         What kind of music/food/TV programme…do you like?
·         What’s your favourite colour?
Can you remember something about your classmates?

After that we reviewed vocabulary related to clothes, appearance, food and animals.
We started talking about countries & nationalities because next day we’re going to start talking about national & local products.
Remember that the most common suffixes for nationalities are: -ish /-ese/ -an. But we have exceptions like: French, Welsh, and Swiss. Don’t forget to spell nationalities in capital letters. Spanish not spanish.

You can revise and do exercises related to nationalities on these links:

For practice we played a game that consisted in guessing what the thing was and where it was from.
·         Is it an animal, food, object, place etc.?
·         Is it Japanese, Chinese, English etc.?

And we finish our first class with pronunciation. We practised vowel sounds and learnt the difference between /I/ for fish and /i:/ for tree.
You can practise pronunciation with this video:

And…don’t forget your homework! Write five sentences using words which are pronounced /I/ and /i:/. You can do your homework on the blog or in your notebook. You can also take part in(participate) our blog by posting your own entries. Tell us about what you did at the weekend, things you like or anything you fancy sharing with us. (Always in English!!!!) Parents’ contributions are welcome.

See you on Wednesday! Have a nice weekend!
