Happy Easter!

Wednesday 25th March

Hello girls!
I said girls because it seems that the boys have given up (stopped) and they won’t be coming next term.
I guess (imagine) you are enjoying your Easter holidays. By the way, what do you know about Easter in the UK? You can learn something watching this video.

But, what did we do in our previous class?
We started revising the test we had done the week before. You should review the grammar points we have studied during the course because you have forgotten some things.

After that, we reviewed zero and first conditional.
Remember the structure of the first conditional.

We use if + present simple                                            will / won’t + infinitive

If it doesn’t rain on Saturday, we’ll go for a walk.
We won’t buy milk if there’s some in the cupboard.

You can begin with the “if” clause or not. When you begin with “if”, you need to use a comma.
And this is an example of Zero conditional.

We use if + present simple                                   present simple

If you begin the sentence with “if”, you have to use a comma.

For homework, finish the slogans for the mobile phone, the DVD, the bike, the diet chocolates and the private school. We’ll have a competition and will discover which the best slogans are!
Also, make up your minds (decide) about the outdoor games you are going to organize as part of our Design for Change project.
·         What games are you going to organize? Find the vocabulary (in English, of course) that you need to teach the kids.
·         What materials or toys do you need for this game?
·         Where are you going to play these games?
·         Which kids are going to play with you? The kids in the park, the ones at the academy?
·         Do you need anybody’s permission? (Parents’, teachers’ the permission of the director of the academy?)
·         And any other points you can think of.

Then, we talked about shopping and we decided on the price of the items (things) we were going to sell in the market. Only Natalia brought something to sell.
I’m afraid you are not very good tradespeople (sellers), because you didn’t sell anything!
Remember how we say and write the prices in English.
We write
We say
We write
We say
£2
Two pounds
49p
Forty- nine ‘pi’
£1.45
One pound forty-five
Forty-nine pence

And to finish with, I’d like to congratulate Almudena on winning our games this term, for the second time this year! Congratulations, Almudena.

Have fun and enjoy your Easter holidays! See you on Wednesday 8th April!!!

An Unusual Class!

Wednesday 18thMarch,

Hello girls…and boys!
Although the boys seem to be missing!

I would like to know your opinion about our Skype session from last Wednesday.
Yes, I know! It was frustrating not to be able to hear our partners from Serbia. It seems that they could hear us but as we couldn’t hear them, they had to type back!
It was interesting, though to know something about their customs and routines. I bet you didn’t know that they have shifts for school! I mean, one month they go to school in the morning and the next month they go in the evening and then, they swap (change) again! And when they have morning shift they start at 7.30! Currently (at present) they are on strike, same as in Spain. But… strike, for them means to have only three hours of class. For us, means not to have school.
Although you looked shy at first, it was great to listen to you asking questions!
I hope you enjoyed despite the sound problems.

After that, we had a short break and later, we did a revision of the things we’ve learnt this term. We revised grammar, vocabulary, listening and also, speaking.

Noelia isn’t coming to class next week because she’s going on a school trip to Barcelona. Enjoy your trip! See you when you come back after Easter! Enjoy your holidays, too!
And for the rest of the class, remember that next week we are having the awards for the games and a ‘Flea Market’. Bring things to sell!
What I’m not sure about is whether (=if) you will be able to carry out (execute) your project. It consisted of outdoor games but it depends on the weather (= climate) and also on how many of you are coming as we haven’t seen some classmates for over two weeks!

'Don't Lose your Pen. If you Lose your Pen, you'll die...'

Wednesday 11th March

Hi!
I hope Paula, Jorge and Rodrigo are studying hard for their exams.

Because…if you study hard, you’ll pass the exams.
Although…if it rains this weekend, you’ll fail your exams! This is the conclusion we got at after doing a follow-up exercise!
Yes. We worked on the first conditional.

We used if + present simple  _________________  will / won’t + infinitive
If it doesn’t rain on Saturday, we’ll go for a walk.
We won’t buy milk if there’s some in the cupboard.

You can begin with the “if” clause or not. When you begin with “if”, you need to use a comma.

We continued the class with an important piece of advice:
“Don’t lose your pen!” If you lose your pen, you’ll die.

If you lose your pen, you won’t be able to take notes.
If you aren’t able to take notes, you won’t pass your exams.
If you don’t pass your exams, you won’t get a degree.
If you don’t get a degree, you won’t find a job.
If you don’t find a job, you won’t earn any money.
If you don’t earn any money, you won’t be able to buy any food.
If you can’t buy any food, you’ll die.
So, if you lose your pen, you’ll die! Don’t lose your pen!!!

Watch a video in here :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKzSEX0Ecys

After that, we talked about your project.
You’ve decided to make kids play outdoors because nowadays kids spent too much time playing with their electronic devices, tablets, laptops, video consoles etc. This way of entertainment makes socializing and interacting with other children more difficult. So, for the information of those who didn’t attend to class today, you’re organizing outdoor games for the children in Learn and Enjoy. When? On Wednesday 25th.
What time? Before the break. 17.15 – 18.00 more or less.
Where? In the park across the bridge.
What games? Rodrigo and Jorge are going to organize a ‘football game’. Find and teach vocabulary in English. The kids will have to say what they’re doing. For example: ‘I’m running’, ‘I’m kicking the ball’ etc. Laura and Paula are going to organize a ‘Sack race’ instead of sacks, they’re using rubbish bags. Finally, Almudena and Natalia will be in charge of ‘hopscotch’. We’ll split the kids into three groups.
Awards will be ‘Certificates’ for the winners and some sweets for everybody.
Find out the information (look for information) you need and download the templates of the awards you’ll be giving to the winners because we must have everything sorted out (solved) by next week.
There’s no extra homework. The homework consists of getting everything ready for the project. You could make posters to let the other teachers know about our ‘Outdoor Games’.

And to end with, in the last week of class after the games and the break, we are having a ‘Flea market’. This is a market to sell things we don’t want or things we have made. So, please, bring something to sell (and some money to buy some stuff). You can make bracelets, cakes or bring toys or books… whatever!
We’ll give away (donate) the money we get to a charity

Points for participation and speaking English in class this afternoon.

Alibi! What Were you Doing Yesterday at Lunchtime?

Wednesday 4th March

Hi guys! How R U?

We started last class with some exercises about past simple and past continuous.
Don’t forget that we use past continuous for an action in progress at a specific time in the past. Past simple is a completed, finished action in the past.

We were walking along the beach when we saw a snake.
long action / action in progress                  Short action that interrupts the other action
When they arrived in New York, it was snowing.
Short action that interrupts the other action long action / action in progress

We read a story about a girl that went to Los Angeles.
She was staying at her cousin’s house. One day, they went out for lunch. They were sitting at their table in the restaurant, when her cousin’s mobile rang. While her cousin was talking on her mobile, she saw Johnny Depp was sitting at the next table. She got up and asked him to have their photo taken. She gave her camera to a waitress and the waitress took the photo of them. When her cousin came back, she told her what had happened. Her cousin started laughing and told her that he wasn’t Johnny Depp! When she looked at the man at the next table, he was still laughing!

Then, we played a game: Alibi.

First, we read the news item: ‘Lunchtime bank robbery in town’.
Two robbers escaped with £500,000 yesterday lunchtime from the Thrift Bank. Police believe it was a well- planned crime carried out (executed) by experienced criminals.

Police arrested two suspects: Nick Cash and Robert Loo. They are friends and have set up (established) an alibi. They say they were together the whole day yesterday. The police officers must try to dismantle (destroy) their alibi.
So, we split the class into two groups. One made up by police officers and the other one by suspects. Suspects had some time to prepare their alibis and then, they were taken to the police station for an interrogatory.
In my opinion they were guilty (the opposite of innocent). Their alibies didn’t hold. There were many contradictions. But, I’m afraid the police officers weren’t very good and they left the criminals free…
And we finished the class reading about ‘British youngest millionaire’.
Tom Hartley made his first million at the age of 14. The teenager became Britain’s youngest millionaire selling luxury sports cars with his father, who owns a car company.
He says he’s good at buying and selling cars.
What are you good at? / What are you bad at?
I’m very bad at remembering names. I’m good at writing, but I’m helpless (very bad) at IT!
