How Old is your Body?

Wednesday 27th May

Hi! How’s everybody?

I hope you are OK.
Almudena, Noelia, how did you get on with the Trinity test this morning? I’m sure it was great! Anyway, let me know on Wednesday.

What did we do last Wednesday?
We went on talking about lifestyles and diet.
We read an article entitled ‘How old is your body?’

Did you know that our body age and our calendar age may not be the same? In fact, our body age can be much younger or much older than our calendar age (even eighteen years different!). We can calculate our body age by answering questions about the way we live.
First we read the answers of Tariq, a record producer, to the questionnaire.
These are some of his answers:
·         He doesn’t do enough exercise.
·         He eats a lot of fresh food but he eats too much meat.
·         He is too busy. There aren’t enough hours in the day!
·         He doesn’t have much free time but he has a few close friends who he tries to see regularly.
Then, we did the quiz to find out our body ages. Your body ages are even younger than your calendar ages! You’re ‘on the ‘minus’ side.’

These were some of the questions you had to answer.

·         How much do you walk a day?
·         How much sport or exercise do you do a week?
·         How much fast food (processed and pre-prepared) do you eat?
·         How many portions of fruit and vegetables do you eat a day?
·         How much water do you drink?
·         What’s your worst diet habit?
·         Are you too stressed?
·         Are you positive enough?
Can you answer his three questions about you?
What's your lifestyle?
What do you like?
What inspires you?
After that, we learnt some vocabulary about sports.
BASKETBALL
TENNIS
Basket
Net
Referee
Racquet
Dribble
Umpire

Singles

Here you have some more vocabulary and exercises about sports.
then, we had our ‘Flipped class.’ Noelia and Carmen did a wonderful job trying to teach and control the kids from the other class! You deserve some extra points!

Are you Worried About your Health?

Wednesday 20th May
Hi girls! How are you doing?

We finished talking about obligation and prohibition in our last class.(At least for the moment).
Is there anything you have to do today?
What don’t you need to do?
What can’t you do?
·         I have to do the shopping! My husband told me there’s no milk!
·         I must wash my hair. It looks awful!
·         I don’t have to water the plants. My husband watered them yesterday.
·         I mustn’t forget to tell the kids to finish their homework. They have to do it!
Then, we started talking about our worries.
How important is it for you to keep fit (do exercise)?
How worried are you about your health (the opposite of ill)?
According to the questionnaire we did in pairs, we don’t seem to be very worried about our health. It’s OK with you because you’re young, but I should! I’m getting on in years (getting old)!
Some of you are desperately worried and unable to sleep about being fat! Don’t do that! It’s equally (the same) worrying being too thin!
You aren’t worried at all about watching too much TV or eating too much junk food.
I’m not sure if it’s because you don’t watch TV or eat fast food, or because you just don’t care!
These are the useful expressions we learnt:
1.    I’m not worried at all about …
2.    She’s a bit worried about …
3.    He’s worried about …
4.    They’re very worried about …
5.    We’re desperately worried and unable to sleep about
These served us to learn quantifiers.
Study the chart below:

Big Quantities
Small quantities
Singular / uncountable nouns
+
A lot (of) /plenty (of) /Lots (of)
(a) Little /(very)little
-
much

?
How much?

Plural / countable nouns
+
A lot (of) /plenty (of) /Lots (of)
(a) Few/ (very) few
-
many

?
How many?

“Much” and its compounds for singular; “many” and its compounds for plural.
·           “Too” before an adjective. He is too young to drive. He’s only 16.
·           “Too much” singular/uncountable nouns. There’s too much milk. Don’t buy more. It’ll go off!
·           “Too many” plural/countable nouns. There are too many chairs in this room. Take two to the other room, please.
·           “enough” before nouns. Are there enough photocopies for everybody?
After adjectives. Are you hot enough? Shall I turn the heating up?
“very”, just an opinion. “too”, often with a negative connotation.
·         That boy is very tall.
·         That boy is too tall. If he continues growing up like that, he may have problems with his bones in the future.

And we finished with the song ‘Shower’ by Becky g
Remember that this is an example of ‘slang.’ This way of speaking is colloquial. This is how young people and teenagers speak among them or at home but it isn’t correct.
Why did you laugh when I said ‘tira pa’ llá’ in Spanish and didn’t you laugh at ‘outta’ which is ‘out of’? So, use the ‘English’ you learn in songs with caution (care)!
Remember to prepare some material for ‘Flipped class’, where you become the teachers and we swap (change) with other groups. The topic is ‘summer’. Prepare some materials or games. NO CROSSWORDS OR WORDSEARCHES! You can explain the students what ‘Midsummer’s night’ is and how it’s celebrated in the UK. You can teach them vocabulary related to summer and holidays. You can teach them how to write a postcard to a friend from their holiday resort etc.
And that was it!!!!

Congratulations, You've Won 5 Million Pounds!!!

Wednesday 13th May

Hello girls!!!
How are you doing?
I hope Almudena gets better (improve) as she didn’t feel very well last Wednesday. And I wonder (asked myself) what happened to Laura because she didn’t come to class.

What did we do in class last Wednesday?
We spent most of the class reviewing previous lessons.
We watched the videos on rules that I had posted on the blog. You didn’t think the rules at Japanese schools are real. Why not? The people explaining the rules are Japanese. So, they must know what they are talking about!
Talking about Japanese issues. So, Almudena, Noelia and Natalia went to the ‘Manga festival’ I’m glad (happy) you enjoyed there! You are really mad about Manga (you really love it).

Obligation
Must (I must, when you impose
the obligation yourself)
Have to
(usually for rules  or laws)
Prohibition
Mustn’t /Can’t /
 isn’t- aren’t allowed to

No necessity
Don’t / doesn’t have to

Last Wednesday you were very lucky because you won £5 Million on the lottery. But it seems that “Money doesn’t bring happiness” because the result at the end of the game was that. You didn’t know what to do with your money and although you had a lot of money, you were really bored! The second round it was a bit better. Some of you managed to find a balance between money and happiness. You kept half of the money and you gave away (gave as a present) the other half and that was rewarding (made you feel very happy)! Carmen’s business in football didn’t get her anywhere. She ended up broke! (She lost all of her money at the end) and Andrea was happy but she lost all of the money. She disagrees with the result. She would like to have the money. It seems you can’t be happy if you don’t have money!
Some of you agreed in keeping your winning a secret, give some money away (give some money as a present) to your relatives (your family). Others agreed in going on (continue) working.
Almudena and Natalia went on a cruise and met a multimillionaire. Luckily they didn’t get married! He was a con man (impostor) and just wanted their money. They invested their money in low risk schemes and kept it. They didn’t have a fortune but they kept their family and friends. They lived happily.
This game helped us to review going to as well as first and second conditionals.

And we finished the class with the song Andrea brought for us. “Just in love” by Selena Gómez.
